Zyban (bupropion HCl)
Drug Information
Possible uses of Zyban
Zyban is prescribed to decrease the cravings for nicotine so individuals
can quit smoking.
Zyban Prescribing Information
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your
physician. Common prescribed dosing for Zyban (sustained release
tablets) is 300 mg/day, given as 150 mg, twice daily. Dosing with
bupropion sustained release tablets should begin at 150 mg/day
given as a single daily dose in the morning. If the 150 mg initial
dose is adequately tolerated, an increase to the 300 mg/day target
dose, given as 150 mg twice daily, may be made as early as day
4 of dosing. There should be an interval of at least 8 hours between
successive doses. Individuals generally take Zyban for 7-12 weeks
(these doses are only generalizations; doses may vary depending
on the patient's medical history). Swallow Zyban medication whole.
Do not crush or chew them or the sustained activity of the drug
will be destroyed and the chances of side effects occurring may
be increased. Most physicians advise patients to quit smoking
within the first week of taking Zyban. Individuals should refrain
from using any nicotine products including gum or patches while
taking Zyban.
Zyban Precautions
Individuals should not exceed the recommended dose of Zyban or
take the medication for longer than prescribed without first consulting
with your physician. Keep all physician and laboratory appointments
while you are using Zyban. Inform your physician of your complete
medical history especially if you have a history of any the following
medical conditions: seizures, central nervous system tumor, head
injury, brain tumor, diabetes, eating disorder, mental conditions,
heart, liver or kidney disease, allergies, etc. Elderly patients
may be more sensitive to the effects of Zyban. The medication
is contraindicated in individuals with known allergies or hypersensitivity
to the medication or any of the components. The medication should
be discontinued if hypersensitivity to any of Zyban ingredients
is noted. If you are pregnant, intend to become pregnant or breastfeeding
do not use this medication. If you become pregnant you should
contact your physician immediately.
Limit or avoid consumption of alcoholic beverages;
alcohol can increase your risk of seizures. Chronic alcohol users
who suddenly stop the intake of alcohol while taking Zyban may
increase the risk of having seizures. Suddenly stopping certain
tranquilizers (e.g., diazepam, chlordiazepoxide) is not recommended
because doing so may increase the risk of having seizures. Elderly
