Possible Uses of Vioxx
Vioxx is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) known as
a COX-2 inhibitor used to relieve the symptoms of osteoarthritis
and to treat pain and menstrual discomfort.
Prescribing Information
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your
physician. Common prescribed dosing for Vioxx is the following:
Osteoarthritis - the recommended
oral dose is 12.5 mg daily although some patients may benefit
from 25 mg daily.
Rheumatoid arthritis - the
recommended oral dose is is 12.5 mg daily although some patients
may benefit from 25 mg daily.
Menstrual cramps or acute pain
- the recommended dose is 50 mg once daily for no longer than
5 days
Please note: These doses are only generalizations;
doses may vary depending on the patient's medical history.
Vioxx Precautions
Individuals should not exceed the recommended dose of Vioxx or
take Vioxx for longer than prescribed without first consulting
with your physician. Keep all physician and laboratory appointments
while you are using Vioxx. Inform your physician of your complete
medical history especially if you have a history of kidney disease,
heart failure, hypertension, liver disease, Stomach complications
(ulcers, cancer, burning in the stomach, tarry or bloody stools,
etc.) Do not take Vioxx if you have a severe allergic reaction
to aspirin or any medicine containing aspirin or to a nonsteroidal
anti-inflammatory drug ( Motrin, Feldene, Naprosyn, Clinoril,
etc) or sulfonamide antibiotic (Septra DS, Bactrim DS, Gantrisin).
A severe reaction includes a severe rash, hives, breathing difficulties,
or dizziness. Vioxx is contraindicated in individuals with known
allergies or hypersensitivity to the medication or any of the
components. The medication should be discontinued if hypersensitivity
to any of the medications ingredients is noted. If you are pregnant,
intend to become pregnant or breastfeeding do not use this medication.
If you become pregnant you should contact your physician immediately.
Vioxx should not be prescribed to children.
Vioxx Drug Interactions
Individuals should report any prescription and/or over the counter
medications that they are taking prior to beginning any new treatment
plan. Special consideration in dosing and the use of Vioxx should
be considered when individuals are taking the following medications:
Aspirin - when taken with Vioxx
increase the risk for ulcers.
Rifampin (anti-mycobacterial)
- can decrease plasma concentrations of Vioxx.
Ace inhibitors (hypertensive medications)
- Vioxx decreases the effectiveness of ace inhibitors.
Lithium (used to treat psychiatric conditions)
- Vioxx have produced an elevation of plasma lithium levels and
a reduction in renal lithium clearance.
Cimetidine (ulcer medication)
- when taken with Vioxx can increase the concentration of Vioxx
in the blood.
Furosemide (diuretic) - Vioxx
may decrease the diuretic effects of certain diuretic medications.
Theophylline (asthma medication)
- co administering Vioxx with theophylline can increase plasma
concentrations of theophylline, Adequate monitoring of theophylline
plasma concentrations should be considered when therapy with Vioxx
is initiated or changed in patients receiving theophylline.
Warfarin (blood thinner) -
anticoagulant activity should be monitored, particularly in the
first few days after initiating or changing Vioxx therapy in patients
receiving warfarin or similar agents, since these patients are
at an increased risk of bleeding complications.
Vioxx Side Effects
Reported side effects were generally mild and include diarrhea,
indigestion, mild stomach pain, gas, nausea, or headache. If they
continue or are bothersome, check with your physician. Check with
your physician as soon as possible if you experience skin rash
or itching; unexplained weight gain; bloating or swelling of ankles,
feet, or hands; vomiting material that looks like coffee grounds,
blood in stool or vomit, yellowing of skin or eyes, unusual fatigue,
etc.. Contact your physician immediately if you experience swelling
of face, lips, eyes, throat, or tongue, difficulty swallowing
or breathing, hoarseness, etc. If you notice other effects not
listed above, contact your physician, nurse, or pharmacist.
Missed Doses of Vioxx
If you miss a dose of Vioxx do not double the next dose, wait
until the regular scheduled time to take the medication. Then
return to your regular dosing schedule.
Overdose of Vioxx
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center
or emergency room immediately. Symptoms following acute NSAID
overdoses are usually limited to lethargy, drowsiness, nausea,
vomiting, and epigastric pain, which are generally reversible
with supportive care. Gastrointestinal bleeding can occur. Hypertension,
acute renal failure, respiratory depression and coma may occur,
but are rare. Anaphylactoid reactions have been reported with
therapeutic ingestion of NSAIDs.
Vioxx Storage
Store Vioxx at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15-30
degrees C) away from light and moisture (do not store Vioxx in
the bathroom). Keep Vioxx and all medications out of the reach
of children.
Vioxx Notes
Do not share Vioxx with others for whom the medication was not
prescribed. Do not use this medicine for other health conditions.
If using this medicine for an extended period of time, obtain
refills before your supply runs out.
