Possible Uses of Valtrex
Valtrex is an antiviral agent used in the treatment of genital
herpes, cold sores (fever blisters) and herpes zoster (shingles),

Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your
physician. Valtrex may be taken with food or milk if the medication
upsets your stomach. Continue taking this medicine for the full
course of treatment even if you feel better in a few days. Common
prescribed dosing for Valtrex is the following:
Cold Sores (fever blisters)
- the recommended dosage of Valtrex for the treatment of cold
sores is 2 grams twice daily for 1 day taken about 12 hours apart.
Therapy should be initiated at the earliest symptom of a cold
sore (e.g., tingling, itching, or burning). There are no data
on the effectiveness of treatment initiated after the development
of clinical signs of a cold sore (e.g., papule, vesicle, or ulcer).
Herpes Zoster - the recommended
dosage of Valtrex for the treatment of herpes zoster is 1 gram
orally 3 times daily for 7 days. Therapy should be initiated at
the earliest sign or symptom of herpes zoster and is most effective
when started within 48 hours of the onset of zoster rash. No data
are available on efficacy of treatment started greater than 72
hours after rash onset.
Genital Herpes (initial episodes) -
The recommended dosage of Valtrex for treatment of initial genital
herpes is 1 gram twice daily for 10 days. There are no data on
the effectiveness of treatment with Valtrex when initiated more
than 72 hours after the onset of signs and symptoms. Therapy was
most effective when administered within 48 hours of the onset
of signs and symptoms.
Recurrent Episodes - the recommended
dosage of Valtrex for the treatment of recurrent genital herpes
is 500 mg twice daily for 3 days. If medical management of a genital
herpes recurrence is indicated, patients should be advised to
initiate therapy at the first sign or symptom of an episode. There
are no data on the effectiveness of treatment with Valtrex when
initiated more than 24 hours after the onset of signs or symptoms.
Suppressive Therapy - the recommended
dosage of Valtrex for chronic suppressive therapy of recurrent
genital herpes is 1 gram once daily. In patients with a history
of 9 or fewer recurrences per year, an alternative dose is 500
mg once daily. The safety and efficacy of therapy with Valtrex
beyond 1 year have not been established

Valtrex Precautions
Individuals should not exceed the recommended dose of Valtrex
or take Valtrex for longer than prescribed without first consulting
with your physician. Keep all physician and laboratory appointments
while you are using acyclovir. Inform your physician of your complete
medical history especially if you have kidney or liver disease,
blood disorders, a weak immune system, such as those with HIV
infection or those who have undergone a bone marrow or kidney
transplant. Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura/hemolytic uremic
syndrome (TTP/HUS), in some cases resulting in death, has occurred
in patients with advanced HIV, allogeneic bone marrow transplant
and renal transplant recipient who have taken large doses of antiviral
medications). Individuals who are allergic to acyclovir, (Zovirex)
valacyclovir (Valtrex), should not take acyclovir. If you are
pregnant, intend to become pregnant or breastfeeding do not use
this medication. If you become pregnant you should contact your
physician immediately. Valtrex should not be prescribed to children.
Drug Interactions
Inform your physician of all nonprescription and prescription
medication you may use, especially Tagamet (cimetidine), Benemid
(probenecid), AZT (zidovudine), Retrovir (zidovudine). Also inform
your physician if you are taking medications that may damage the
kidneys such as Neomycin or Streptomycin. Do not start, stop or
change the dose of any medicine without physician or pharmacist
approval.

Reported side effects were generally mild and include nausea,
vomiting, headache, loss of appetite, weakness, stomach pain or

or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of a medication overdose
may include irregular or unusually slow or fast heartbeat, unusual
nervousness or excitement, rapid breathing, confusion, hallucinations,
and seizures.
Valtrex Storage
Store Valtrex at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F
(15-30 degrees C) away from light and moisture (do not store Valtrex
in the bathroom). Keep Valtrex and all medications out of the
reach of children.
Valtrex Notes
Valtrex is most effective when started within 48 hours of prodrome
period (time period before the blisters actually form when an individual
reports "itching or tingling" in the region). Valtrex
does not protect against the spread of the herpes virus. Do not
share Valtrex with others for whom the medication was not prescribed.
Do not use this medicine for other health conditions. If using this
medicine for an extended period of time, obtain refills before your
supply runs out.
